Jack and Joan Hindin (founders) launched the New Zealand Charitable Foundation (NZCF) in February 1986 with an initial gift of $10,000 (since increased). The purpose of this foundation is to recruit capital sums which are invested and the resulting income is distributed in perpetuity to charities and causes chosen by those who provide the capital. A limited pool of discretionary income is available each year and is distributed with the assistance of the trust’s regional advisors.
The New Zealand Charitable Foundation was established by deed on 31 December 1985.
Under the terms of the trust deed, the trustee may exercise its discretion to pay income from the fund to:
- Organisations registered as charitable entities with the Ministry of Internal Affairs Charities division. Applicant charities must be administered by a properly incorporated body with an appointed committee or board.
- Charitable Organisations that operate with effect in the Canterbury area.
Please note: The Foundation normally supports ongoing funding of applicants rather than assisting the purchase of capital items. Because of the limited funds available, grants concentrate on organisations assisting humanitarian issues, along with limited funding to the Arts.
Funding Amount and Time Frames
Only Charities based in Canterbury are eligible for these grants.
Applications to be considered as a recipient for funding are assessed annually. The next granting cycle will be from 16th September 2019 to 4th October 2019.
All applications must be completed via the online application form.
The length of the assessment process is dependent on the volume of applications and all applicants are notified of the decision. During the assessment period, trustees may request further clarification from the applicant regarding their application.
Regrettably, due to the number of applications received, we are unable to provide detailed feedback on unsuccessful applications. Please note the decision of the Trustees is final and not subject to any appeals process.
